LEARNING AND ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR GROUP

The LAB group comprises the laboratories of John Staddon and other faculty from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. The group is interested in mechanisms of adaptive behavior, studied experimentally using animals, and theoretically using dynamic mathematical and computer models. Our long-term aim is to assemble simple models for motivation and associative and non-associative learning into a comprehensive dynamic system to explain learning and motivation. The group has a strong interest in the underlying neurophysiology, but our first priority is to achieve a thorough understanding at the behavioral level. The resulting process is "what the brain does" and should thus serve as a guide to neurophysiological study. Experimental emphasis is on operant and classical conditioning using animal subjects, usually pigeons, rats and zebrafish.
